Despicable Me
The original Despicable Me shines best by flattening the dichotomy between good guys and bad guys, removing all but the most heart-strings-tugging stakes from what would otherwise be a minefield of superhero and spy thriller movie tropes.
Within the realm of the career supervillain Gru (Steve Carell who is portrayed by the part with a smattering that has his Eastern European accent), good guys are boring , state-funded bureaucrats.
Bad guys aren’t really as bad, but simply ambitious pseudo-scientists with huge ideas and healthy competitive personalities. They’re not actually trying to cause harm to anyone.
In reality, when Gru starts unknowingly step-fathering three orphaned girls (the most vulnerable of them, voiced with adoration by Elsie Fisher from Eighth grade’s Elsie Fisher)’s Elsie Fisher) he gets rid of all his sociopathic tendencies, and transforms into an unreal Good Guy that is populated with a an entirely new antagonist, Vector (Jason Segal).
Although the sequels and separate Minions vehicles unnecessarily add to things up, they also complicate the DM mythology by muddying the Gru’s genealogy and providing the Minions their own personalities (the amusing part of this film is the way Gru speaks to each Minion like they’re individuals, and gives them names like normies and names, even though they’re difficult to distinguish) which implies that we need to inquire about the ways in which Minions produce and/or visit the bathroom.
The very the first Despicable Me film is a pure blend of the values of a family-friendly culture, slapstick and uninteresting character designs with a great laugh or two. If only it could end there. We must instead ask whether a Minion wearing its pants wrapped around its ankles isn’t genitals, does it mean it’s naked? –Dom Sinacola
